What is the longest you have been loyal as a customer? Are you still loyal? What's the secret/attraction?

i have a favourite brand of koala-shaped sweet treats i always go back to, it's not necessarily the great quality or taste that makes them attractive but all the memories attached to them when it comes to upscale/expensive products i have a perfume by a famous french female designer who only ever wore black clothes that i have relied on ever since i was old enough to care about things like perfume, i love the smell and i keep using it simply because i know it never fails to impress and i'm not sure there's one out there as good as the one i use out. i also like that no-one else in my social circles knows or has it. i will try others but always have this as a staple oh and of course my fruity laptop which i've already written about in the other threat - i like its longevity and user-friendly surface and OS... qualities that (at least right now) no other producer can keep up with.

Great examples. Nostalgia and smiles for the sweets, classic brand for the perfume and logic for the computer. And what is more, I think that actually each of the three different approaches to choice make complete sense and suit the various products.

Pretty cool too that any associated emotions would probably be very appropriate as well.

Perfume for me is far too attached to people/times of my life to continue being loyal to. Every now and then I will buy something that I used to love. But I prefer to attach new fragrances to new times in my life.
I would often walk past someone and recognise the fragrance. With a little pang of heartache some times and some times with a wide grin, I would even comment on it.

Hm, I tried to think of a brand that I have been loyal too but I actually cant do it. I experience both sides of most consumer duopolies (smartphones, soft drinks, graphic card makers etc.) without any particular resistance to switch.
Oh wait, the bank! I've been a customer at the same bank since I turned 18. Why? Because my parents had accounts there so it was for the credit rating. Do they offer anything special? Not really. But things for average run-of-the-mill consumer run smoothly there. There was never any major fudgeup that would make me angry. And for every year I'm with them the cost of switching increases, if only because of their access to my credit history for so many years. So I'm loyal because of laziness and parental mimicry, basically.

I think banking is a different issue somehow. A bit like doctors and lawyers maybe. They have access to our histories and confidential matters so we are loath to just change them. Switching them is a bigger deal than most things.

I agree that emotion and memory play a huge role... still using a good old SA favourite infant talcum powder, for everything from body pampering to ant deterrant. I've tried alternatives that actually smell better - but don't make me warm and fuzzy.

There's that nostalgia element again - I agree, it's a powerful force and soaked in very positive emotions.

There is a sandwich/toast spread that people tend to either love or loathe...it's as black as my heart, know the one I mean? I think I've had a 30 year relationship with it and tbh I like it more now than I did when I was a child.

Yes, I have that particular affiliation myself. On the flip side of the childhood nostalgia brand coin, there's a brand if cheap sweets that I feel rather betrayed by. They've expanded their range of flavours in all directions and frankly the new ones are revolting. I'm even nervous to try the original flavours again, in case they've messed up those too.
