The pope resigns ... rumours he is seeking immunity from prosecution ... Oscar Pistorius allegedly shot his girlfriend ... WHUT?! I have to admit, that of the two news items, the Oscar thing shook me more. I mean, he had the whole world's support before the Olympics - and now look. It strikes me as being very sad indeed, whatever the truth of it all is. What do you think? And who will be the next pope?  |

I'm wondering if the pope will get locked up in a castle for the rest of his days, like the first pope who 'retired'. That'd be kinda fun.
As for Pistorius - yeah, really weird. I was in Cape Town on Thursday, eating breakfast in this hawaiian cafe with free wifi with my netbook feeding me Twitter, and overheard this woman next to me reading her phone and telling the guy she was with, 'Wow, my friend's friend's girlfriend let herself into his house as a surprise for valentines and he shot her dead!' - and then I saw the news. I hear the Police aren't convinced he fired in self-defense, the neighbours allegedly heard some shots, screaming and then some more shots, and the shots were fired through the bathroom door, with her inside the bathroom... It's very sad, if it turns out to NOT have been an 'accident'. Why go through everything he's gone through, become a household hero in SA, only to do something that stupid and throw it all away?

I read somewhere that the guy prosecuting the pope has a history of 'odd' lawsuits etc, so I don't know what to think about it all to be honest. I have been very amused by all the pope jokes though.
I thought the police had dismissed claims that the Pistorius shooting could have been an accident? To be honest, I am trying to curb my natural inclination to read everything about current events, because I can get obsessive about it. Some interesting stuff coming out though and I have seen a lot of the usual criticism of Twitter for the jokes and for sort of pre-judging him as a murderer.
